Consultations for Diagnosis and Assessment

Initial Diagnosis

An accurate and thorough diagnosis is the foundation for identifying and addressing specific areas of need.

An initial diagnostic assessment will typically cost around £800. The main part of the assessment normally takes place in our Cambridge clinic and takes around 4 hours. It includes a detailed face-to-face interview and a direct behavioural observation of the child in the clinic. The interview takes between two to three hours and is normally carried out with one or both parents, although where relevant it can be with someone else who is familiar with the child’s history and current circumstances. The child need not be present for the interview, but must be available for the direct behavioural observation. The observation of the child takes about one hour. It involves a short play session (for younger or non-verbal children) and a conversation-based and combined play session for older and/or more verbal children. Those able to undertake a short non-verbal test of general ability will also be asked to complete this in clinic.

Parents will be asked to complete a number of rating scales and a telephone interview in the week following the initial clinic evaluation. Where possible an additional observation of the child in school will also be included as part of the assessment. Where this is not possible, and if parents wish it, we will ask teaching staff to complete a number of rating scales and a short summary of the child’s behaviours and achievements in school.

Within two weeks of the assessment being completed, BeginningwithA will provide a detailed report on the child’s diagnosis, a summary of the child’s developmental history, a detailed description of their current presentation in each of the key ASD areas, together with post-diagnostic advice and a resource list.

Diagnostic Follow-up and Profiling

For many children with an existing ASD diagnosis, uncertainties still exist about what the diagnosis actually means; where exactly on the spectrum the child is placed; what aspects of their presentation are likely to present the greatest challenges and where the child’s strengths lie. Extended diagnostic evaluation and behavioural profiling is available for children with an existing diagnosis on the autism spectrum for whom parents or others would like to explore developmental history and current behavioural issues in more detail than may have been required for an initial diagnosis.

This innovative assessment package is available for children with an existing diagnosis of autism/ASD and typically costs around £500. The diagnosis need not have been made by BeginningwithA, but it should be a definitive ASD diagnosis that is recorded in the child’s medical notes.

The evaluation can be carried out by telephone or face-to-face and involves the parent completing a number of interviews and rating scales. The full evaluation takes approximately 5 hours.

Within two weeks of the evaluation being completed, BeginningwithA will provide a detailed report providing in-depth descriptions of the child’s presentation in the key areas covered.

There is an additional option for ongoing behavioural monitoring which involves a repeat evaluation on a 6-monthly basis. Each repeat evaluation will cost £300 and will involve telephone interviews, completion of rating scales and detailed analysis of progress.

Cognitive Assessment

The cognitive abilities of children with autism spectrum disorders vary widely from the severely impaired individual, often with a learning disability, to the very able individual with cognitive abilities well above average. Furthermore, many children have highly variable individual ability profiles, often showing a very high level of ability in some areas whilst struggling substantially in others. This assessment involves extensive evaluation of the child’s abilities in a wide range of areas related to cognitive function.

The assessment is suitable for children where concerns have been raised by parents or others about social communication and cognitive functioning, with or without an autism/ASD diagnosis. The cost varies depending on which tests are undertaken, but ranges from £400 for a standard cognitive evaluation to £800 for an extended cognitive evaluation. For people undertaking an initial standard evaluation who return later for the extended version, the cost will be adjusted to take prior work into account and should be discussed with BeginningwithA when arranging the assessment.

Both the standard and extended versions must be carried out face-face with the child. The standard evaluation includes tests of verbal and non-verbal reasoning, visuo-spatial ability and achievement in literacy, numeracy, written and oral expression. The extended evaluation includes additional tests of motor ability, speech and language skills, visual and verbal long- and short-term memory and visual and auditory attention.

Within two weeks of an evaluation being complete, BeginningwithA will provide a detailed report with test scores and interpretations of the child’s cognitive profile in each of the areas covered.

There is an additional option for ongoing monitoring of cognitive functioning which involves a repeat evaluation on a 12-monthly basis. Repeat evaluations will cost £250 for a standard evaluation and £500 for an extended evaluation. For people undertaking an initial standard evaluation and returning later for an extended evaluation the cost will be adjusted to take the prior work into account and should be discussed with BeginningwithA when arranging the assessment.
